One of my biggest expectation going back to China was the food. Yea sure, there's "chinese food" in America, but it's changed to fit the taste of American people. There's no dish call the chicken broccoli and the rice that comes with it will surely make you gain a pound or two (yuck, kind of make you think twice before getting one huh?) The other down part is that all of the ingredient imported from China is frozen, which means they will never taste as good as where it came from.
Although I didn't have much of an appetite due to jetlag, I still got to taste a couple of really delicious things.
The first is hot clam chowder soup with a crispy bread on top from Pizza Hut! The pizza hut in china is more like a regular restaurant than a fast food joint. There's also a lot more flavor to choose from than we have here. This clam chowder soup used to be my favorite dish when I was little so I had to try it again! But sadly, it didn't meet my expectations, maybe it's because I set too high of a standard but it wasn't as savory nor creamy as it used to be.
Next up is a dish that apparently was my favorite also, according to my mom. She said I use to call them little people and bite off their heads.
Anyways, I was first kind of disturbed when it came, because they really do look like little people!
Am I right or am I right, haha, but eventually I took a bite and I totally loved it! I'm not sure exactly what they are, but I suppose they are in the same family as clams. Be careful ordering this in a restaurant though, because they usually contain a lot of sand, and most of the time they are not properly cleaned which can make the eating process really uncomfortable
Ok, now I know this looks. . .rather strange and maybe even gross, but this was probably the best thing I had when I was in China. In fact, we had to order a second plate because it was sooo good!
What is it you ask? STINKY TOFU! (Behind it is just scallion pankcake, pay no attention to that.) I'm not sure what kind of tofu they used but basically it's just fried tofu to the max. It usually comes with a small plate of hot sauce Very unhealthy because it's fried, but very very delicious!
This is the SHINSENGUMI RAMEN! Also one of my favorite ramen house, there's dupes of this shop here in the states, but none of them taste as good as the one in China! Of course if it's in Japan will be even better. I believe I got the roasted duck ramen, whenever I order noodles I usually leave the soup, but this soup is too good to waste! We also had gyoza because the waitress sent it to the wrong table, my cousin didn't want them to take it back so she ordered me to finish it immediately
They found out in the end and tried to make us pay, but my cousin is a beast when she fight, so we didn't have to pay extra in the end~
So now comes the small snacks~ We were on our way to visit my grandfathers grave and one of my aunt had fresh pork jerky. This one was so tender and flavorful, a lot better than the packaged ones, but if you can't find fresh ones, pre-made ones are pretty good too!
Strawberry & Vanilla Glico~ Once I opened the package, I was sure I smelt this before. Then I took a bite and immediately knew what it was, it tastes just like the yanyan cup that I loved since little. Perfect alternative if you can't find the other!
Asia always have weird flavors to their products, this one for example is the Red wine chocolate glico. I was curious about the flavor so I picked one up. The taste of grape was very profound, it matched really well with the dark chocolate. Although I'm sure the content of wine is not that high, my stomach felt warm afterwards.
I am a matcha crazed fan, everytime I see food that has green tea flavor I instantly go and grab it. This one is call the green tea mousse pocky. Since most of the green tea sweets I've had either mixed too much cream or too much sugar. I was surprised when I had this, the greent ea flavor is very clean and pure, more on the bland side which I love because green tea should just be green tea. I really really love this flavor, and I had to go back to buy more so I can bring it back
Now the final thing is this cappuccino. I didn't really care for this at all
What I cared was anything but the drink. The cafe was filled with teddy bears! Not small ones, but giant life size ones, my and my cousin weren't sure where to sit since the bears took up quite a few seats and it was already very crowded.
I ended up sitting right next to one, it was so cute and fluffy! There's another one chilling on the couch.
We got to see how the bears are treated around here. A couple came in and had to sit there so the girl put the poor bear on the table
That ends my food journey in Shanghai, but there's still more topics to come, I think the next one I'll do fashion!
Bye bye
